Sexual Issues

Many people can experience sexual difficulties at any time during their life and they may appear suddenly, without any apparent reason. Problems will often resolve themselves, yet there are times when it may be necessary to seek help. Hypnotherapy can be an effective treatment for many sexual issues, though it is important that any medical condition is investigated in the first instance by a visit to the General Practitioner.

Sexual difficulties are generally problems that prevent an individual or a couple from enjoying sex and can make sexual relations difficult. There may be some embarrassment over discussing certain issues with a partner, which can lead to the problem not being addressed. According to the NHS, it is estimated that one in ten men and almost 50% of women are affected at some stage in their life by a sexual problem. Sexual difficulties can occur early in a person’s life, develop suddenly after a previously satisfying sex life or develop gradually.

Some of the most common sexual problems for men include:

  • Performance anxiety
  • Erectile dysfunction/impotence
  • Premature ejaculation
  • Loss of sexual desire and arousal

For women, the most commonly experienced sexual problems are:

  • Vaginismus
  • Loss of sexual desire and arousal

To identify the cause of a sexual problem both physical and psychological factors have to be considered. After ruling out any physical factors that may be contributing to the problem, hypnotherapy can be considered. In many cases, sexual problems are a result of an underlying psychological issue, often triggered by stress, anxiety or fear.

How hypnotherapy can help

Hypnotherapy can be beneficial for people experiencing sexual problems through helping to change negative or limiting thoughts or behaviours. Since sexual problems can be a result of increased levels of stress and anxiety, reducing anxiety, negative thinking and negative forecasting is a necessary first step. The aim is to access the subconscious mind to change the thought patterns and behaviours that may be causing the problem.

By focusing our attention onto how we wish our lives to be, we remove ourself from the cycle of negative thinking and anxiety. With less anxiety we are also able to lead more fulfilling lives and enjoy better relationships and deal with problems from a greater intellectual perspective. Any mental pressure surrounding intercourse and performance anxiety can then be removed. We can begin to trust our bodies and ignore any internal criticism, replacing it with a more positive, controlled state of mind.
